Progress
Results to Date The
initiative began with the formation of an Advisory Group
and data collection to assist in strategy development.
Advisory Group members reviewed the results, identified
the four key strategies, and developed action plans for
each strategy. The group has made progress on a number
of fronts:RECRUITMENT
- Completed a board/staff recruitment and retention
guide for affordable housing and community development
organizations that describes best practices, planning
and action tools, and includes a bibliography, and
a list of resources.
- Received a grant from the Greater Twin Cities United
Way to support research and the development of recruitment
and outreach tools, the launching of educational events,
and the communication of findings and strategies.
SELF-ASSESSMENT
- Developed two organizational culture audits and
tested one of the models.
- Compiled a bibliography of culture audits and
assessment tools, as well as a list of consultants
who can administer culture audits.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
- Received a grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation
to expand careership opportunities through the Human
Capital Development Initiative.
- Placed seven apprentices in host organizations
including one funder.
- Helped establish a Community
Development Scholarship Program at the Hubert
H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the
University of Minnesota that will target students
of color locally and nationally. The scholarship fund
has a local careership component.
- Continued to explore additional collaboration
opportunities with the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute
of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
- Planned a fall 2002 luncheon to formally launch
the Changing the Face of Housing in Minnesota campaign
and raise awareness of issues.
ORGANIZATIONAL SUPPORT
- Developing a list of criteria for considering
grants to culturally diverse organizations.
- Seeking funds for capacity building grants.
Changing the Face of Housing in Minnesota: Goal and
Key StrategiesChanging the Face of Housing in Minnesota
is a joint initiative of the Corporation
for Supportive Housing (CSH), the Family Housing Fund,
and the Twin Cities Local Initiatives Support Corporation
(LISC). It was created to support local housing and community
development organizations in their efforts to recruit
and maintain a diverse board of directors and to recruit,
hire, and retain a diverse staff. Changing the Face of
Housing in Minnesota helps organizations implement strategies
that will increase the participation of communities of
color at all levels of housing production, planning, management,
policy, and decision making. The initiative’s strategies
were defined in the Participation of Communities of
Color in Affordable Housing Processes and Decisions Report
(June 2000). The project has four key strategies:
- Identify model recruitment and outreach tools and
help organizations think creatively about how to attract
and retain people of color.
- Identify and develop self-assessment tools and
training that will enable organizations to identify
internal barriers that may be preventing their success
in retaining people of color on staffs and boards.
- Create high-level scholarship, internship, and
intensive developmental experiences in affordable
housing organizations for people of color (Expand
LISC’s Human Capital Development Initiative/HCDI1).
- Provide multi-year seed capacity building grants
and technical assistance to emerging culturally specific
affordable housing organizations
